About
The Classical style Meeting House was constructed in 1838 on a site donated and endowed by James Andrews, Great Grandfather of John Miller Andrews (Businessman and Northern Ireland's second Prime Minister) and Thomas Andrews Jnr. who was lost in the Titanic tragedy. The stained-glass windows memorialise members of this family. Features of the interior include a bas relief by Rosamond Praeger and a pipe organ which, although not original to this church, dates back to 1860.
In the entrance there are portraits and sculptures of John Miller, a founding member and owner of Comber Distillery. The interior is substantially unchanged with box pews, pulpit and balcony with wrought iron balustrade. The grounds of the Church are particularly beautiful with mature trees and are home to a variety of birds and small animals.
Saturday 14th Sep at 14:30 in the Church Hall, there will be a talk:
‘William James Pirrie of Comber?’
On 17th April 1879 the marriage of Margaret Montgomery Carlisle place in the Royal Academical Institution Belfast (where the bride’s father was a teacher) to William James Pirrie, of Comber, County Down.
The connection of Viscount Pirrie with the town is not well known and all but overlooked by biographers. In this illustrated Talk Sandra Gilpin will explore Pirrie’s roots, his connection with Comber and the possibility that his funeral in 1924 could have taken place in the adjoining graveyard; where in 1895 his Mother had been laid to rest.
