The small village of Whiterock is situated by the sea and is known largely for its Yacht Clubs, Strangford Lough Yacht Club and Down Cruising Club.
The Light Ship
Whiterock is also home to the Light Ship Petrel, which was built in 1915 by the Dublin Dockyard Company and is the only lightship still afloat in Ireland. Although this restored historic vessel is the headquarters of Down Cruising Club, it is also available for hire.
Sketrick Castle
Between the two Yacht Clubs is Sketrick Castle, a 15th Century tower house on Sketrick Island, now in ruins. Sketrick Castle has a rich history and although it was actively involved in warfare during the 16th century, it wasn’t until 1896 that half of it collapsed due to a storm.
