Camphill Community Glencraig EHOD 2024

About

The Camphill Community Glencraig is situated between Belfast and Bangor, on a beautiful estate of 100 acres with woods, fields and parklands sloping down to the shore of Belfast Lough. It is part of the International Camphill Movement started in 1940 by Dr Karl Konig and influenced by recommendations from Rudolf Steiner. Glencraig was established in 1954 to provide a unique approach to supporting children, young people and adults with learning disabilities.

The Glencraig Community also promotes social, cultural, artistic and sustainable environmental practices. From the 1960's until the present time there was about 20 - 40 international volunteers who would come and stay for at least a year at Glencraig. Most of these volunteers came from mainland Europe but some came from other Continents, Ireland and other parts of the UK.

Up until the end of the 20th Century the coworkers/volunteers were involved in all aspects of the Glencraig Community. In recent years there is more of an emphasis that people in paid employment carry out the main tasks in the Community. However there is a great appreciation for the contribution the coworkers/volunteers have made in the past and their current involvement.

Glencraig provides a unique approach to supporting children, young people and adults with learning disabilities. Glencraig has developed a reputation for providing a special holistic approach that enables everyone to reach their full potential and live a content and meaningful life. Glencraig prides itself on the high standards of care, support and education provided in a nurturing environment.

Glencraig promotes organic agriculture/horticulture and other environmentally sustainable practices. Social and cultural activities, including drama and music, bring people together and celebrate significant moments during the course of the week, year and the lives of individuals. The interaction of diverse nationalities, creeds, abilities and gender enrich the way of life, whilst allowing each individual to follow their own conscience.
