Weave a Willow Potato Basket

The Walled Garden, 47 Craigdarragh Road, Helen's Bay, County Down, BT19 1UB
Weave a Willow Potato Basket

About

Join us for our "Weave a traditional Irish Potato Basket or Sciathog" workshop in the Walled Garden and explore the traditions of Irish willow basketry.

The Sciathog (pronounced skeeogue) takes its name from the Irish word for shield (sciath) and was traditionally used to strain boiled potatoes. With the season of Irish new potatoes fast approaching and the much-anticipated harvest of our PGI-status Comber Earlies, this handcrafted basket could be a charming addition to your kitchen—or perhaps a stylish bread basket or fruit bowl to impress your guests!

Spend the day learning this traditional craft with talented local willow artist,Heather McDermott using sustainable willow grown in our Salley Garden. You'll be working in a beautiful heritage setting, enjoying good food, great company, and leaving with a handcrafted basket to be proud of.
