The Ark Open Farm
On the same road, not far from the Museum, The Ark Open Farm is a fantastic family day out set in 40 acres of beautiful countryside between Newtownards and Bangor. This family run farm has been open for over 30 years and promises a fun-filled family day out for all. Whitespots Country Park
Whitespots is a popular spot for local walkers located within an abandoned industrial landscape. The Bangor and Newtown Mining Company was founded in 1776 to extract the natural resources arounds Whitespots, but within a decade the mine was deemed a financial loss due to low productivity and subsequently closed.
Mining resumed in 1827 under the Newtownards Mining Company who expanded the existing shafts and invested in new machinery. Within a forty-year period succeeded in excavating over six miles of shafts and levels at the mine.
During the 1850s, at the height of mining activity, 400 men and boys were employed at Whitespots.
Ards and North Down Borough Council is committed to progressing exciting redevelopment plans for Whitespots Country Park by creating a unique open landscape that will seamlessly link to the Greenways Network and act as a gateway to the Ards Peninsula and Strangford Lough.
