About

Part of Merry May Day

Set Dancing Workshop for Adult Beginners Organised by the Holywood Set Dancing Class

The May Day celebrations have a long tradition in Holywood. The town centre is pedestrianised and lined with stalls including a wide variety of food stalls. There are musical performances and the tradition of local school children dancing around the town’s Maypole - the only surviving one in Ireland.

Very different to Riverdance, set dancing is a form of country dancing danced to Irish dance tunes - usually in groups of eight dancers. It provides a great way to get fit while having fun.

The Holywood Set Dancing class performed at the Holywood May Day Festival last year. However the class is about dancing for enjoyment, not for performance so we are running a workshop so you can give it a try.

There will be an emphasis on learning the simple “123 steps” which are the basis for set dancing – most people pick these up fairly quickly with the right guidance.

Note that this is group dancing but there is no need to come with a partner.

Although the workshop is targeted at adults, those over the age of 14 are welcome to join in. However those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Adults - £5 | Under 21 - £3

Any profits made by the Holywood Set Dancing Class are donated to charity.
