Welig Heritage Crafts is run by basketmaker and traditional countryside skills practitioner Clive Lyttle and artist Elaine Burke from their smallholding near Portaferry on the Ards Peninsula in rural County Down where they run a sustainable business based on quality, heritage, traditions and on their creativity. They produce a range of work both functional and artistic and pass on their skills and knowledge to others through demonstrations, talks, and a wide range of workshops.
What makes us sustainable...
‘Our business is based on our five acre smallholding where we have planted willow coppice, hazel coppice and mixed woodland of native species which we sustainably manage for our work and the benefit of wildlife.’ Other environmentally friendly measures key to the business are use of solar energy for electricity, rainwater harvesting, commitment to waste reduction and recycling and having a comprehensive green policy. To save energy and reduce our carbon footprint To reduce waste To reduce water use To minimise our negative impact on the environment To manage our land sustainably and to benefit wildlife To support local traders and producers and ethical trading To use effective monitoring systems To commit to continued improvement
“We are dedicated to the sustainable development of all strands of our business and aim to continue to improve and grow our ‘green credentials’ to be an example of best practice. First and foremost, as a business and as individuals we are committed to working and living in a sustainable way. “
