“Phenomenal” choir Tenebrae coming to Portaferry
23rd May 2022
Described as “phenomenal” (The Times) and “devastatingly beautiful” (Gramophone Magazine), award-winning choir Tenebrae is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles, renowned for its passion and precision. On Friday 24 June, Tenebrae Consort is coming to Northern Ireland - for one night only - to perform at the Portico of Ards arts and heritage centre in Portaferry.
Tenebrae is renowned for its highly-acclaimed interpretations of choral music ranging from the Renaissance through to contemporary choral masterpieces, and has appeared at major festivals and venues including the BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival, Leipzig Gewandhaus (Germany) and Melbourne Festival (Australia).
The Portico of Ards is the perfect venue for this event: Built in 1841, originally as a Presbyterian church, the venue has fantastic acoustics. The grade A listed architecture was restored in 2015 and the church reopened the following year as an arts and heritage centre. With capacity for 300 people and its location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Portico draws audiences from far and wide.
The Tenebrae Consort’s visit to Portico is the jewel in the crown of this year’s classical music programme, supported by Lottery project Funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The Chair of the Portico board Neil McClure said, “The Tenebrae Consort is quite simply superb and we are absolutely thrilled to be the hosts for this visit to Northern Ireland.”
The programme, entitled ‘When Sleep Comes’, includes pieces by Foreshaw, Gibbons, Hildegard von Bingen and Tallis. For details on the programme or to book please visit porticoards.com
