Part of the Great Wars Trail
Conway Square is home to the statue of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair "Paddy" Mayne DSO & Three Bars. Born in Newtownards, (11 January 1915 – 14 December 1955). Mayne was a British Army soldier, Ireland and British Lions rugby union international, lawyer, amateur boxer and a founding member of the Special Air Service (SAS).
During the course of the Second World War he became one of the British Army's most highly decorated soldiers. He received the Distinguished Service Order with three bars, one of only seven British servicemen to receive that award four times during World War II. Additionally, the post-war French Government awarded him the Legion d'honneur and the Croix de Guerre. He was controversially denied a Victoria Cross.
